With its new digital exhibition platform, In This Layered World, All Perception Is Real, the Kunstverein Bielefeld has established a new format for online exhibition. In collaboration with the I: project space in Beijing, the online platform will display international artists whose work addresses the contemporary significance of digital image production. Beginning on May 15, 2020, at 7 pm, the platform will host a weekly series featuring the works of Gottfried Jäger (b. 1937 in Burg, lives and works in Bielefeld), Shuang Li (b. 1990 in Wuyishan, China, lives and works in Yiwu, China), Lin Ke (b. 1984 in Wenzhou, China, lives and works in Hangzhou and Shanghai, China), Rachele Maistrello (b. 1986 in Vittorio Veneto, Italien), Sarah Ortmeyer (b. 1980 in Frankfurt am Main) and Pete Jiadong Qiang (b. 1991 in Xingping, China, lives and works in London).

In the contemporary world, it is no longer possible to assess images solely by technical, material or traditional art-historical criteria. Digital images are code and form at one and the same time. They circulate within modifiable dataset configurations and are subject to fundamentally altered modes of production and reception. Within this context, In This Layered World, All Perception Is Real addresses the experience which goes along with this entanglement of real and virtual, material and imaginary, physical and mental. The invited artists tap the expressive potential of our changing reality, mapping its new image worlds while abandoning any claims to realness, authenticity or originality.

The new online project is closely associated with Digital Media and Experiment, a course offered by the Fachhochschule Bielefeld, the city’s University of Applied Sciences. Taking the conditions of online space as their starting point, students develop their own contributions to the platform.

Implicit Space

My reaction to the work of Pete Jiadong Qiang relates to his approaches to spatiality, body reference and immersion. A photo scan from the immediate surroundings of my apartment in Bielefeld was mapped into a 3D model of my private room. This breaks up the self-contained and private space and interweaves it with the public space of Bielefeld's inner city – in this way, I bring the outside to the inside, which in turn creates a new, immersive space within a space. Moreover, the hectic pace of the city shot contrasts with the calm camera movement through the space, which ultimately results in the difficulty of orientation and thus the dissolution of one's own bodily reference in the space.

"Red Diamond" is the title of a company that existed from the end of 2007 until 2009 in Cupertino, California. It was founded by a former employee of the "Green Diamond Factory" in Beijing, China, which was closed eight years earlier. Only recently the story of this factory came to public through an archive compiled by Rachele Maistrello and Li Jian Ping. In this context, the history of the sister company "Red Diamond" also came to light.

In the 1990s, the "Green Diamond Factory" implanted microchips refined in diamond powder, called "GDsensors", into precise parts of the human body. With its help, human gestures, in combination with virtual contact lenses and ultrasound waves, were able to significantly improve the sensory experience of the natural outside world through the user‘s body. In this way, the user of the "GDsensor" was able to experience sensations such as the heat of the sun on the skin or the pure air on the face, even in factory (HISTORY - green diamond).

With a turning point in the smartphone market in 2007, the sister company "Red Diamond" produced a further development of the old "GDsensors". Similar to the "GDsensor", the functionality of the new "RDsensor" is triggered by gestures of the human body. It is no longer a physical sensor that is implanted into the human body, but a tracking software that was pre-installed on many smartphones in 2008 and 2009 under secrecy.

The swipe and tap gestures of the user were transferred to the device and the "RDsensor" via the touch screen of the smartphone, which, through an immense and immersive inclusion of information, enabled a new, yet contemporary way of perceiving and feeling. Hectic, noise and power could now be experienced in real time, at any place, by every smartphone user.

Only about 14 months later, the use of the "RDsensor" as a component in smartphones had become superfluous - we started to develop the first signs of restlessness at rest. As an extension of our biological body, we have accepted the smartphone and the accompanying illusory world as our new reallife. We have learned to perceive the feelings implied by the "RDsensor" as our natural ones and to be always productive and creative and finally: always and everywhere to be accessible. In combination with social networks and a metropolitan lifestyle, all new everyday desire for stress fulfilled. We have learned to take over the "Red Diamond's" job for ourselves. In 2009 the production in the "Red Diamond Company" was stopped until further notice.

(The user of the "RDsensor" was colloquially called "Smombie", in professional circles they got the Title "Red Diamond".)
